PART 2

Chapter 13

RAVI DECIDES it’s time for Jason to meet his parents.

He’s dreading it mightily. He knows his father won’t like Jason. He knows his father will become furious, will probably refuse to even allow the guy into the house. But Ravi won’t back down this time. He can’t. His relationship with Jason is too important to him.

He’s fallen in love.

He hasn’t said anything to anyone, not yet, but there’s no doubting the way he feels. He became certain about his feelings yesterday, when they lay in bed together. He knew he was in love when Jason held on to him in the midst of that out-of-the-blue panic attack, and he saw how Jason drew strength from being with him. He knew when he looked into Jason’s eyes and saw how much Jason loves him.

He has found something wonderful with Jason. It’s too precious for him to allow fear of his father’s rage to dictate this part of his life. He’s not going to hide his relationship with Jason from anyone. He’s proud of what they’ve found in each other, and he’s going to live it to the fullest. His father’s bigotry, Jason’s unknowable fear and unknown past, the homophobia that remains in the world, none of that will stop him from being with Jason.

He climbs out of bed and inhales deeply. There seems to be something fresh in the air, as if the world itself has been purified. Still in his pajamas, he goes to the kitchen where his parents are sitting at the table, reading the paper together, a Sunday morning ritual for them.

“Good morning, Mama, Papa.”

Adheesh flicks a smile at him before turning back to the opinion pages. “Good morning, son.”

Gira puts aside the section she was reading. “Are you ready for breakfast?”

“I’m ready for you to meet my boyfriend.”

Adheesh and Gira both look at him. Gira’s face is beaming.

“Can I have him over for dinner today?” Ravi asks.

“Of course,” Gira says at once. “That would be wonderful. Do you think he will like your favorite dishes, or should I cook something traditionally American?”

Ravi doesn’t think the menu will matter. They may not even get to the part where everyone sits down at the table together. “Whatever you make will be fine, Mama.”

Gira goes to the refrigerator and begins surveying the contents of the freezer, apparently trying to decide on a main course. Adheesh gives him a stern smile. “I’ll be glad to meet your boyfriend, son,” he says affectionately.

Ravi nods, already steeling himself for this afternoon.
